About Plas Yolyn

Plas Yolyn is a magnificent Grade II* listed stately home in Shropshire, just 4 miles from Ellesmere. This 17th-century property has links to the Sheriff of Shropshire, Oliver Cromwell and Welsh royalty. Seven enormous bedrooms (all with ensuites) make this the perfect spot for your extended family to pretend they're posh for a week. The house has been carefully renovated to maintain its historical character while adding modern luxuries.

Set within 10 acres of stunning grounds including formal gardens, a croquet lawn, tennis court, orchard, woodland walks and even a lake. You'll feel like lords and ladies of the manor as you explore your temporary kingdom. Previous guests have spent hours playing tennis, croquet and football before relaxing in the hot tub. It's like Downton Abbey, but with better plumbing and fewer servants giving you judgy looks.

The accommodation includes three king-size double bedrooms, one double, one ground floor double, one ground floor twin (which can become a super king-size) and one twin - all with ensuites. There's also a family bathroom with free-standing bath and sauna. Two lounges mean adults can escape the kids and the games room with table tennis provides entertainment.

Nearby Chirk Castle offers fascinating Welsh royal history (4 miles away, 10-minute drive). Ellesmere with its shops and amenities is just 4 miles away (10-minute drive). The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is worth visiting (15 miles, 25 minutes).

This is a superb property and certainly worth the money. We had a family of ten staying for a week in February. Such a big house could be cold but the central heating was more than adequate the kitchen Aga was always warm and the three wood burners and an endless supply of logs kept us cosy. We usually ate in the kitchen but had a lovely formal meal in the dining room prepared by a local chef. All the facilities were wellused including the tennis court, the hot tub, the sauna and the games room with quality games. The house has been very well modernised to preserve the original character downstairs together with the stairs and landings all with old wooden floors. The bedrooms were enormous, carpeted and with a range of bed options which meant that all the families were happy. Each room had an excellent ensuite with unlimited hot water. Having two lounges meant that the children could colonise one and spread their games over the floor without annoying the adults. The grounds are extensive but in winter wellingtons are essential. Also, at this time of year a number of local attractions were closed Chirk Castle, the local dairy and the Pontcysyillte Aqueduct and remember that the house is in a rural setting the surrounding roads were awash with mud small roads and big tractors moving between fields. Highly recommended and must be a jewel in the summer.

Wonderful building in gorgeous grounds. Lots of room for groups to be together or find a quiet nook. Lots of information on shops, eating places and activities provided by the host and she went above and beyond to make our stay as special as possible.
Plas Yolyn is absolutely exceptional. We have been holidaying as a group every year since 1989 and this house is without doubt the best we have stayed in. The whole house was spotless and perfectly presented. Every single one of the bedrooms was spacious, clean and comfortable and the rest of the house and grounds were a just a delight. Really loved it! I can't recommend Plas Yolyn highly enough.

We took the family away for my husbands 70th and we needed somewhere spacious enough to accommodate us all, with comfort and facilities which Plas Yolyn ticked every box. Its a beautiful and very special place, we totally loved it and would definitely return again.

Best cottage we have stayed at as a large family. Excellent on cleanliness and all the extras available the bathrooms hand wash moisturiser and kitchen spices sugar cleaning products etc. The hot tub was maintained daily which was great as this was used a lot. The grounds are exceptional for ball games exploring and our favourite....tennis courts. We encountered an issue with the drains which within 2 hrs of reporting this was being resolved. Communication was excellent.a beautiful house and we would definitely go back there.
Plas Yolyn was a delight. Our family group ranged in age from 19 months up to 86 years and it was perfect for everyone. The house is beautiful, comfortable and spacious. The bedrooms all had en suites with the addition of a large family bathroom and sauna too. Everything was provided , even down to the basics . We neednt have gone shopping beforehand! The tennis court , goal net , table tennis table, hot tub and lovely grounds were well used and appreciated, as was the well equipped toy room for the younger members . There was something to do or not, if relaxation is needed! for everyone. We would definitely recommend it as a brilliant house and area to accommodate a family gathering. Stans Superstore in St.Martins has everything you may need to top up ,and we found Hawkins butchers in Ellesmere excellent quality and service. The British ironworks museum, Chirk castle, Ellesmere lake and Pontcysyllte aquaduct Chapel tea rooms were all worth visiting . The hot tub was checked daily and we got quick responses to any questions we asked before the stay. All in all it was a perfect holiday. Thank you Plas Yolyn .
A wonderful property and grounds, great for a multi generational holiday, everyone loved it from the 4 year old up to the 74 year old! There are generous spaces to be all together but also plenty of opportunities to have a quiet moment. Everyone loved all the sports, we happily spent hours playing tennis, croquets and football, finishing off with a chill in the hot tub. The area also provided lots of activities, tubing from Llangollen was great fun. Only negatives, one hairdryer between 7 bedrooms is not really enough. The beds were all extremely firm, some of us prefer them softer.
Plas Yolyn was a fantastic venue for our multigenerational familys birthday celebrations. Comfortable, beautifully clean, spacious bedrooms and lounges. It is probably the best equipped holiday house weve ever rented everything you could possibly need for cooking and feeding a crowd, thoughtful touches for staying with small children and a plentiful supply of indoor and outdoor games. The generous welcome basket was much appreciated. We were very lucky with the weather so were able to enjoy sitting out on the patio admiring the beautiful flower border and playing in the garden, field and tennis courts. When it got a bit chilly in the evenings, my 94 yearold mother in law retreated to the cosy rocking chair by the Aga and the younger ones enjoyed the hot tub. Great location we had a lovely meal in the Boathouse in Ellesmere and also visited two nearby National Trust properties, Chirk Castle and Attingham Park. Plas Yolyn is excellent so clean and well equipped with loads of space. The gardens are good for walking around, too. We've been doing annual reunions at large houses for over twenty years this one is equal top with two others. We all loved Plas Yolyn and will definitely be back.
The fact we have booked Plas Yolyn again for 2025 says it all. The property is ideal for large parties and is in a lovely countryside location but near enough to local amenities. The property as a whole is extremely well equipped, especially the kitchen, although there is only one hairdryer between 14 guests and no electric shaver and toothbrush points.
A beautiful place to stay, and in the winter the hot tub, games room and in our case the grand piano, were, 'the icing on the cake' The Manager, Rachael was most helpful.

Plas Yolyn was perfect for our multi generation get together to celebrate a special birthday. The children found plenty to occupy them and we all had a wonderful time. There was space for us a to be together or have peace and quiet for the older generation. Everything you could possibly need was provided. Rachel was extremely helpful when l had a query. Fabulous house for a multi generational family holiday. Tastefully decorated throughout, beautifully maintained gardens, hottub and tennis court..all of which were well used. Never seen such a well equipped kitchen in a holiday let and great to have 2 fridges which enabled catering for many meals. The welcome basket was a nice touch and we enjoyed reading about the history of the house and area.

Regarding the accuracy of the listing, we found and booked the property through the Big Cottages website. We just paid for it through Sykes. The property description on the Big Cottages site was accurate but did not do full justice to this excellent property. We very much enjoyed our week at Plas Yolyn. The house is very comfortable and spacious, beautifully decorated and furnished, well maintained and well equipped. We also loved its beautiful garden and spacious grounds and enjoyed the tennis court and the hot tub. As a family three generations including five children we have a week's holiday together every year. Plas Yolyn was our twelfth holiday house, and certainly one of the best we have stayed in, if not the best though it would have been rather too luxurious and spacious for us when the children were much younger. We very much liked the local area. There are four Landranger OS books of walks overlapping the area so no lack of lovely walks and cyclingbiking. We also visited Chirk Castle, Errdig Hall and other gardens, and Ellesmere and its lakes. We shopped in Llangollen and canoed and hired a barge for a day on the Llangollen Canal. We also lazed a lot in Plas Yolyn's lovely garden.

Had a fabulous week with our friends 12 of us, and with so much space everywhere, we never felt on top of each other. Extremely clean and well maintained. My only request would be for hairdryers to be put in each of the bedrooms. Its a great place to stay and would thoroughly recommend it.

We were a group of 13 adult family and friends celebrating a couple of big birthdays who had a truly fantastic weekend at Plas Yolyn. The house is stunning with 7 fabulous bedrooms which were beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The living areas were all comfortable and also furnished to a very high standard. The grounds are so impressive, with gorgeous outdoor furniture which we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy together with the hot tub. We played games in the garden including rounders and hide and seek along with tennis and indoor table tennis! We would highly recommend the property.
Plas Yolyn provided us with everything we needed for a multigenerational family holiday. There was so much to be enjoyed in the house and grounds which were beautifully kept, but still had ample space for football, cricket, tennis and boules. The hot tub and patio were enjoyed by all in the lovely weather we had. The accommodation was spotlessly clean, and every bit as good as the pictures suggested it would be. Highly recommend.
We have just returned from a weeks stay at Plas Yolyn and are already thinking about our next stay! There were four adults and six children, with the children ranging in age from 10 to 16, and we all had the most amazing time. On arrival, we were absolutely blown away by the size of the house, it seemed so much bigger in real life. We were also impressed with the cleanliness every room and every bathroom was absolutely spotless! The welcome hamper on arrival was a lovely touch too. With it being a self catering accommodation, we had brought our own cleaning productslaundry productstea towelscondiments etc but there was no need apart from fresh food it had absolutely everything you could need. There was an abundance of cutlerykitchen utensilscookwarecrockery, we really couldnt think of anything else we could possibly need. We enjoyed use of the hot tub which was cleaned out early every morning ready for the day ahead. We didnt have the best weather, it was a bit drizzly for most of the week but that didnt stop the children having fun in the enormous grounds they spent hours outside playing football and tennis. We had a couple of cosy film nights in the sitting room with the log fire burning, it was really relaxing and the sofas were so comfortable. We loved that each bedroom had its own ensuite bathroom, with so many of us sharing a house it was nice to never have to queue for a loo! The bedrooms were all huge and beautifully presented, with most overlooking the stunning grounds. We really couldnt find fault at all, it was just perfect!

One issue that could be put right, the tennis court needs the lines repainting. We were all keen tennis players but this prevented us playing matches.
Absolutely fantastic house and grounds. All rooms were immaculate and spacious. There was so much to do, there was no need to venture away from the house. We made good use of the hot tub, tennis courts, the childrens toys and table tennis. We all had so much fun together, from the youngest at 3 years old to us oldies, we couldn't have asked for a nicer place to have our family get together. To top it all we had fantastic weather. We hope to return soon.

After waiting or 2years to visit Plas Yolyn due to Covid we certainly were not disappointed. There were 7 couples in total...family and friends and we all thought the house was fantastic. It had everything we wanted both inside and outside. Everywhere was immaculately clean from the very impressive bedrooms, the large dining room, the lounge and the snug and well equipped kitchen. We had 2 members of the party who went fishing a few days whilst others played tennis, others table tennis or simply relaxing on the beautiful patio. The hot tub was an added bonus too. We all enjoyed it so much nobody wanted to leave and definitely looking to book to come back next year. .
There were 13 adults and we all thought that the house was Fantastic,it was very warm and very clean the facilities were great,excelent hot tub and sauna,great size bedrooms and excelent shower in each,the fishing was great fun as was the tennis court,The armchairs and settees were extremely cumfortable in both of the quiet rooms. The kitchen had everything you could want which made life very easy for getting meals.Great to also have a washing machine and tumble dryer The 2 infants we had with us loved the toys in the games room as did some of the adults playing table tennis.Certainly no complaints and would love to revisit,We were there to celebrate our 60th wedding anniversary Lovely memories to keep Thank you Regards D Taylor
We loved the history of the house and the fabulous grounds and facilities as it was ideal for our family of 4 generations get together.

Perfect place to have an extended family get together. The house did not disappoint, it was amazingly clean with lots of areas to sit together or apart if you wanted to. We enjoyed it so much we didnt want to leave, so we have booked again.
