Garthmyl Guide
Garthmyl's cottages with hot tubs offer a perfect mid-Wales escape in Montgomeryshire. This small village sits along the River Severn, providing a peaceful base for exploring the Welsh borders.
The area boasts several outstanding attractions, with Powis Castle (4.5/5 TripAdvisor) just 5 miles away. Montgomery Castle ruins and the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway are also must-visits according to visitor reviews.
History buffs might be interested to know that Garthmyl Hall was once frequented by Queen Victoria during her Welsh travels, with the monarch reportedly enjoying the area's tranquil riverside setting.
Accommodation ranges from traditional stone cottages to modern barn conversions, many featuring private hot tubs. Group cottages sleeping 8-12 guests are popular for family gatherings, while couples often opt for the smaller converted stables with enclosed gardens.

Sightseeing
Garthmyl's central location makes it brilliant for exploring mid-Wales. I always recommend starting at Montgomery, just 3 miles away. The town's well-preserved Georgian architecture and impressive castle ruins (4.3/5 TripAdvisor) offer fantastic photo opportunities.
Powis Castle (SY21 8RF) is open 10am-5pm daily and sits just 5 miles from Garthmyl. Its world-famous gardens and medieval fortress earn it 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor. The terraced gardens are spectacular in summer, but we think they look equally impressive in autumn.
The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway (SY21 0SF) runs steam trains through beautiful countryside. Operating weekends and school holidays from March to October, it scores 4.7/5 on TripAdvisor. Book ahead as trains often sell out, especially during school breaks.
Lake Vyrnwy (SY10 0NA) is worth the 30-minute drive. This Victorian reservoir features a striking Gothic water tower and offers walking trails, bird watching and cycling. TripAdvisor users rate it 4.8/5, making it one of the highest-rated attractions nearby.
Pet Friendly
Many Garthmyl cottages welcome dogs and the area is perfect for four-legged visitors. The River Severn path offers miles of walking directly from most cottages, with minimal stiles to navigate.
The Nags Head pub in Garthmyl (SY15 6RS) welcomes dogs in its bar area and garden. They even provide water bowls and treats. We've found their Sunday roasts particularly good after a long morning walk!
Powis Castle allows dogs in the gardens (not the castle itself) if kept on leads. The woodland walks are particularly good for dogs who need to burn energy.
For supplies, Montgomery's Bunners pet shop (SY15 6PH) stocks quality food and emergency supplies. They're open Tuesday-Saturday 9am-5pm and have a great selection of locally made dog treats.
Top 3 attractions you have to see in Garthmyl
The Montgomery Canal runs through Garthmyl and offers beautiful towpath walks. The restored section supports rare aquatic plants and wildlife. The Garthmyl to Berriew stretch is about 3 miles and makes a perfect morning walk. One visitor told me: "We saw kingfishers, herons and even an otter! Much quieter than other canals we've walked."
Glansevern Hall Gardens (SY21 9JN) sits just outside Garthmyl and opens Thursday-Sunday, 10am-5pm from April to September. The 25-acre gardens include lakeside walks, a walled garden and an orangery café. Recent visitors praise the "stunning lakeside views" and "excellent homemade cakes" in the café. After exploring, you'll appreciate returning to your hot tub!
Kerry Ridgeway (SY15 6HH) is an ancient drovers' road offering spectacular views across Wales and England. The 15-mile route can be walked in sections, with the Kerry to Bishop's Castle stretch most popular. A TripAdvisor reviewer noted: "On a clear day you can see 70 miles in all directions. Absolutely worth the climb for those views."
Is Garthmyl suitable for families with young children?
Yes! Many cottages provide high chairs and cots. The Powysland Museum in Welshpool has child-friendly exhibits and the light railway offers special family events. Most local pubs have children's menus and play areas.
What's the best time to visit Garthmyl?
Spring and summer offer the best weather for enjoying your hot tub and exploring. May-June sees fewer crowds than July-August. Autumn brings beautiful colours to the surrounding countryside, while winter offers cosy pubs with roaring fires.
Are there any good restaurants nearby?
The Nags Head in Garthmyl serves excellent pub food. For something special, try The Checkers in Montgomery (former Michelin star) or The Corn Store in Welshpool for modern British cuisine using local ingredients.
Do I need a car to stay in Garthmyl?
A car is recommended. While there's a limited bus service connecting Garthmyl to Welshpool and Newtown, the rural location means most attractions require driving. Taxis are available but need booking in advance.
Is there shopping nearby?
Welshpool (5 miles) has supermarkets, independent shops and a weekly market. Montgomery offers boutique shopping with antique stores and craft shops. For serious retail therapy, Shrewsbury is 30 minutes away.
What if it rains during our stay?
Rain needn't spoil your break! Your hot tub is usable whatever the weather. Indoor attractions include the Powysland Museum, Montgomery's Old Bell Museum and several National Trust properties within driving distance.
